I’ve had this book buried in my electronic TBR for the longest time and for some strange reason, it called out to me yesterday and I’m truly glad it did.
Set in Austria towards the end of WW2, it tells the story of a Jewish boy and Roma girl who risk their lives transporting Lipizzaner stallions to safety. It’s a superbly-written tale, with the harrowing cost of war balanced by a heart-thumping, pacy adventure and brave, resourceful protagonists. It definitely doesn’t shy away from the abhorrent realities of the Nazi regime, but I love how courage, friendship and hope shine through brightly. A brilliant addition to our wartime collection of books for Upper Key Stage 2/Upper Middle Grade readers.
