I’ve been really impressed with this book for girls of Key Stage 2 age, it’s a great example of how picture books can work successfully for an older audience. It’s been written succinctly to ensure that the right amount of information is imparted without being overwhelming or too text-heavy. This means that if girls want to read the book on their own without an adult with them, they’ll be able to understand the topic and feel comfortable with and reassured by their new knowledge. Plus, there’s a great Q&A section (which importantly mentions period poverty), information on puberty and a list of other books and websites that might be useful. Clear diagrams aid understanding and I particularly like the fact that the illustrations show both mum and dad talking to their daughter together, rather than periods just being seen as a female-only discussion. We’ve found the book really useful – I highly recommend it.
